The Université de Montréal Exemption Scholarship is a financial aid program designed to reduce or eliminate international tuition fees for highly qualified international students pursuing their studies at UdeM. Introduced in Fall 2020, the scholarship supports students enrolled in undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degree programs.

The program has been extended and will continue to be offered through the Winter 2026 academic term. It is intended to attract outstanding students from across the globe while promoting academic excellence and international engagement at all levels of study.

Scholarship Benefits

The exemption scholarship is awarded based on the level of study and academic merit. Tuition reductions vary depending on program type and the student’s academic performance at the time of admission.

Undergraduate Programs
Students enrolled in bachelor’s programs are eligible for one of two levels of tuition exemption:

  • Level A
    • $458.02 CAD per credit
    • $6,870.30 CAD per 15-credit session
    • $13,740.60 CAD per academic year (30 credits)
  • Level B
    • $218.28 CAD per credit
    • $3,274.20 CAD per 15-credit session
    • $6,548.40 CAD per academic year (30 credits)

Note: Scholarship amounts are directly deducted from tuition fees.



Master’s Programs
Students in graduate studies benefit from the following reductions:

  • Research-Based Programs
    • $336.66 CAD per credit
    • $5,050.00 CAD per 15-credit session
    • $15,150.00 CAD per year (3 sessions)
  • Non-Research Programs
    • $239.75 CAD per credit
    • $3,596.25 CAD per 15-credit session
    • $10,788.75 CAD per year (3 sessions)

Note: Writing and thesis correction sessions are billed at Quebec resident rates.

Doctoral Programs (PhD)

  • $509.08 CAD per credit
  • $7,636.20 CAD per 15-credit session
  • $22,908.60 CAD per academic year (3 sessions)

Note: Doctoral students benefit from tuition rates equivalent to those of Quebec residents.



Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for the Université de Montréal Exemption Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be an international student (excluding citizens of France and French-speaking Belgium).
  • Have received an offer of admission to a full-time degree program (bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD) at UdeM.
  • Hold valid study permits (CAQ and study permit) for the duration of the academic program.
  • Be enrolled full-time at UdeM for each term covered by the scholarship.
  • Not be benefiting from any other type of tuition exemption.

Failure to meet any of the above conditions may result in withdrawal of the scholarship.

Application Process

Students are automatically considered for the exemption scholarship upon admission. No separate application is required. The process consists of the following steps:

  1. Apply for Admission
    1. Choose a program of study from the university’s wide selection.
    1. Ensure you meet the specific program admission requirements and deadlines.
    1. Submit your online application through the Université de Montréal’s official admissions platform.
  2. Receive Admission Offer
    1. After submitting your application, track your status through the Centre étudiant portal.
    1. Upon admission, your academic records will be automatically reviewed to determine scholarship eligibility.
  3. Scholarship Notification
    1. If eligible, you will receive an official scholarship award letter via email outlining the level of exemption granted and the total financial benefit.
